You gotta start somewhere
Mar 13, 2025If you’re a perfectionist like me, you might avoid certain actions because they feel uncomfortable. This reluctance often stems from the belief that things should be done in a specific way, which is largely a mental construct.
Recently, I spoke with a colleague and offered him advice on something he had been struggling with for a while. I realized I was giving him guidance that I hadn’t been following myself. While talking with him, I encouraged him to start something simple, avoid overthinking, and minimize any friction. Not worrying whether it was pretty, or even if he thought was providing any value at all!
Immediately after our call, I decided to take my own advice and take action.
I hadn’t considered posting my thoughts or learnings on my own site until now. I was afraid of how I should present myself and worried that my list of posts would be extremely empty. This concern is particularly strong when I look at my dear friend Brandur Leach, who has been posting since 2014 (way to go, Brandur!).
The point is that no matter what you envision or feel compelled to do at some point, you have to start somewhere. It may not be perfect, but to get where you want to go, you gotta start somewhere.
